This is a book that asks to be read slowly; the lovely, evocative writing is meant to be savored - and it did take me a long time to finish it. But I never lost the thread of the story, or got tripped up by the many characters - even though most were fleeting, returning by reference only. It’s about letting life happen to you, instead of trying to control the narrative. Unfortunately, the ebook needs better editing. Several minor errors tripped me up (using the wrong names, neglecting to delete a misplaced word). NBD, and they didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book as a whole.

I enjoyed this novel about a woman who heals after tragic losses by moving to Guatemala and by the relationships she forms with the people she finds there. There is not much of a plot, and this is more of a collection of vignettes about the people in the village and the hotel guests, some of them tragic and some full of hope. There are some predictable elements here, but I didn’t mind.

This book has so many possibilities of greatness but sadly, it leaves one wanting. I'm being very generous with a rating of 4. The setting is fantastic and is probably the strongest aspect of this book. The characters are okay, with some being memorable but the story events are choppy and leaves the reader a bit disoriented as the time line tends towards confusion. I'm used to flashbacks and alternating chapters that jump in time but with good writing there are usually connections that the reader can recognize, making the jumps a significant part of the overall story. That is not the case with this book. I would hope that the author, who has other well written books, would take some time to rewrite this book and give it the attention it deserves. (..and where was the editor during the writing?)
