I went into this series completely blind and only from the recommendation of an online booktok/bookstagram content creator.
I was pleasantly surprised with the beginning of the book especially when it came to the FMC, Pricsa, meeting the MMC, Lorian. It wasn't an instant attraction kind of set up, the build up of the attraction between the two was slow and over time so that by the time there was about 25-30% of the book left, they had history and banter and tension to work off of one another. Which to me was a fresh take as opposed to the two experiencing immediate attraction to one another right after the first meeting.
Seeing as how this is Book 1 in a four book series, the plot and set up of the world and the political machinations is a marathon, not a sprint. The synopsis of Book 1 only mentions Pricsa having dreams of a man with green eyes haunting her for as long as she can remember, yet when she does meet Lorian who is the man who haunts her dreams, she doesn't try to figure out why a mercenary like him would be showing up in her dreams repeatedly. I am sure this is a plot hole of sorts that gets sorted out in the subsequent books, because then throughout Book 1 we find out more about Pricsa in relation to her forbidden power and who Lorian truly is.
A favorite, very poignant, quote I found from Book 1 is as follows: "How do you control a population? You keep the people poor and uneducated. Tell them the same lie for centuries and tie that lie to religion. Those people will believe you even when the truth is dancing naked in front of them." If that quote isn't hit on the nail/on the nose/whacked over the head appropriate for what is going on right now in the real world, then I don't know what else is.

I’m definitely going to listen to the next book. But this isn’t my favorite romantasy. And this isn’t the hero I’d want. But we’ll see if we can learn more in the next book.

Graphic: Death, Sexual content, Blood, Murder
Moderate: Child death, Toxic relationship, Grief, Suicide attempt, Death of parent
Minor: Confinement, Rape, Kidnapping
Okay decent start to the series, I’m definitely interested. I wish there was more follow through on certain plots/side comments but hopefully those will come in the later books?
Once I started this book I couldn’t stop. I spent all day thinking about it. Ordered Amazon overnight to get me book 2 because I knew I would finish this tonight. Loved it so much!

So many secrets! I really enjoyed this. I liked the magic system and it was just a very interesting concept but not too complicated to grasp and understand. The pacing for me was just a tad bit slow at first but it picked up. And don’t we just love a morally grey, grumpy male character with green eyes! Anxious to read the next book to see what happens with these characters with that ending!
