This book had me constantly kicking my feet! Loved the back and forth banter. The tension was so gratifying between the FMC and MMC. I will say that I saw some of the plot points coming, but I was pleasantly surprised about a lot of the rest. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book!!
What. The. Heck?! So you know those books you pick up, and from the very first page you are completely ensnared? This book was one of those. I couldn’t get through it fast enough.
The world building was fantastic, the character development incredible, and the FMC’s growth in just the first few chapters is inspiring. The MMC took some time to really grow on me, but by the end I was craving more of him! I think it was a perfect start to what will be an amazing series, and I’m so glad I can move straight into book 2!
Prisca has lived her life terrified of her secret being discovered by those who would see her (and her family) killed for it. She only has a short time left to find a way to escape before her truth is revealed. But when her hand is forced in a selfless act to save another, her time to plan is cut short.
She is forced to flee the only home she knows after facing a devastating loss and an earth-shaking truth.
One thing I love so much in a good romantasy is characters who just seem real. Like someone I’d be friends with. Prisca starts out as a typical young woman who is living in a world in which it’s dangerous for her to even exist. When she is forced to run and stand on her own two feet, she of course makes some dumb, emotional decisions initially.
But Prisca’s growth in this series is incredible. She learns as she goes, she fights for what she believes, and she struggles internally with doing what she selfishly desires vs doing the right thing for the majority. She never seems overconfident or too self-assured, but determined and steadfast in her goal to save those she loves and the others like her.
Enter Lorian…a male she recognizes and loathes after he opens his mouth for the first time. Talk about a morally gray MMC…Lorian is charcoal. He CAN care, and when he does it is with a depth and loyalty that is unshakable. But that man can flip a switch and become the coldest and most ruthless jerk all for the sake of completing his next task. But Prisca…she is his. And he is a possessive male who will not let her go.
And let me just say that the side characters could absolutely ALL have their own stories. Every one of them has been amazing and had so much depth. I truly can’t think of one that I don’t want to know more about. The mercenaries, Prisca’s brother, her bestie, her lost Demos, her Aunt, Madinia, Viser…literally all of them have their own personality and background and it MAKES this story so much more relatable!
Some of the moments that unfolded were absolutely predictable, but other twists and turns were shocking and unexpected. And the ending…oof. Talk about some world-shattering truths. Poor Prisca thought she’d finally accomplished something and found someone she might love…and BAM…there goes the rug.
If you love a jealous, possessive, YOU’RE MINE MMC who is morally gray to the core, a feisty, sharp-tongued, cunning FMC who has a heart for people, hidden truths, Fae, touch her and wish you were ☠️, secret identities, annoyances to lovers to frenemies, aaaand jealousy, bargains, & betrayal, you’re gonna want to read this sooner than later!

DNF ~40% in.
So many eye rolling moments I just couldn’t do it any more.
The next paragraphs are some examples from the notes I was making while listening. Even if I’m wrong on the twists and predictions just the way the writing patronises the reader with the way it is all communicated was grating on me. On reflection reading these notes and sharing them with my friend I was able to make the decision that I won’t be wasting my time on this any longer. Nope!
The incessant continuing of "he looked at me as if he could read my mind”. Stated once it’s unnoticeable. Repeated every other paragraph? Cue me rolling my eyes and waiting for the reveal that Lorien’s power is mind reading: "shock"!
The way the book tries to keep mystery and treating the reader as unintelligent by keeping the reveal a "secret" despite having clearly revealed the "twists" by the way it’s written stopped me from being able to properly lean into the storyline and appreciate it.
How many times does she have to refer to them as mercenaries 🤦♀️ clearly they are not and he is the prince she is meant to be finding. Again another "twist" to see coming a mile off.
