Well, that was not what I expected! Holy trauma, look up trigger warnings! An important book based on a true-story of a freed slave that turns paranormal. I’m glad I read it.

An absolutely incredible, heartbreaking, meticulously crafted classic.
Morrison paints her characters with care and complexity, and I found each endearing despite their flaws. Sethe’s overwhelming love for her children, Paul D’s hesitation to love anything, and Beloved’s hunger to be loved created an intricate and effective study of how disempowerment and trauma change people, their needs, and the allowances they make for themselves.
The structure of the novel, while difficult to follow at times, was a highly effective reflection of how we approach the atrocities and extreme trauma of slavery. Morrison shows that we can never tackle these topics directly, and so circles around them with her storytelling, just as Sethe does, in an attempt to patch together and heal the damage of slavery.
I have been so moved by this book and can’t recommend it enough.

toni morrison’s writing style can take a second to get used too, and occasionally came at the expense of understanding certain events, but i don’t see how a book like this could’ve been written any other way.

certain authors would benefit greatly from reading toni’s work, and experiencing the ways she’s delved into the lives of black people.
