Oh my goodness this was a wonderful book! Loved the sweet personality, drive, and bravery from our main character Kek. All the people around him were so good to him as well. I hope to be as kind, gentle and helpful to refugees or anyone else who needs a little extra help in this world as the characters in this book were!
A 5th-grade African refugee comes to live in Minnesota. The writing style looks like a long poem, and it uses simple language to give the feel of an ESL writer, but the language is a lot more advanced than I would expect from a 5th-grade ESL learner.
My problems with with suspension of disbelief aside, it was a touching story about how hard it can be to adjust to a new culture and location. It made me hope that the US can accept more refugees soon.

Amazing book, a beautiful look at the struggle of being a refuge--so human, full of grief, and hope, and humor. I loved this one! This will be a great read aloud during our migration unit.

Quick read with great insight for how hard it is for immigrants to come to America & confirm to our culture. Especially since this boy came from Africa to a cold Minnesota winter! It's written in prose-style and it reads really quick. Written well from the viewpoint of Kek, a young boy who is trying to correlate his life in Africa to that in Minnesota, through a cow.
It took me less than two hours to read this YA book, but I'm glad I read it. It is the story of a young Sudanese boy who immigrates to America when his family is killed. It's sad, hopeful, and heartbreaking all at the same time. Would be a great read-aloud or book club book for a classroom.
Great book with a very strong, yet gentle main character. As a refuge from Sudan, a young boy adjusts to living in the United States. This is told in free verse so it flows along at a fast clip. The story is compelling and tugged at my heart.
