How does a 5th grader make sense of a new world after losing his home & family? A beautifully written story of a Sudanese refugee's experience coming to the United States.

That being said, Africa is a continent, not a single country. I wish the author had made the Sudanese experience more clear instead of creating a seemingly universal African experience. I also wish the research she had done was acknowledged in some way or at least the lives of the refugees who inspired her story.

A well-written book about a boy who moves to America from Africa because war. This gave me more insight into the struggles immigrants face and the hope we can provide.

5 Stars! I’m a mess after reading this. I loved it so much! Such an amazing story about life, loss, love and hope. So many lessons to be learned for both children and adults. Enjoy!

Read for class.

Beautifully written novel in verse. Would be a great introduction for children to understand the refugee experience.

Such a touching story of Sudanese refugee Kek as he travels to snowbound Minnesota to live. As he adjusts to his new life, he longs for his old one, which was filled with a beautiful family in a horrendous situation. It's a great story, simply told, that's effective, funny and powerful.
