Kek is a refugee from Sudan, trying to make sense of life in Minnesota. It's winter when he arrives - a time when few Americans want to live in Minnesota, much less a boy who's used to hot temperatures year round. He lives with his aunt and older cousin Ganwar, and adjusts to life in America with some help from his case worker, Dave; sympathetic ESL teachers; and a friendly girl named Hannah. He and Ganwar both bond with a lonely cow who reminds them of the life and families they've lost.

The verse-novel format makes it easy and quick to read. Supplemental materials at the end answer some of the questions that readers may have about the war in Sudan that created many "lost boys" like Kek, and direct them to further resources about refugees in general.

It amazes me when a book with such few words can be so moving, touching. Such a lovely book, for kids and adults.

This was a beautiful story written in verse about a boy named Kek who is a refugee from Sudan. He comes to Minnesota to live with his aunt and cousin. A touching story about mistakes, optimism, and friendship, as well as hardship. I think any child could identify with this story, but it is nice to see a book written from an immigrant's perspective. I loved this book. Scholastic.com's book wizard states that the interest level is grades 6-8, with the grade level equivalent of 4.3. I would recommend this book to both children and adults.
