I wanted to love it. A queer retelling of the Princess Diaries? Sounds amazing. But I just didn't get drawn in at all.

The narration fell flat... pretty consistently. Random tidbits would be thrown in mid-narration, probably to try to give characters depth, but it was a lot more telling than showing and didn't make sense in context. The sentence structures used would often be short and similar, which made it feel like I was slogging through a middle grades book instead of an adult novel, which is what I was looking for.

It just felt very unrealistic with little character development and no conflict.

if i were anne hathaway, i'd sue

i usually don't give .5 stars. however, this is a special case. allow me to list my grievances:

1. the characters have no chemistry. how do you write a book where the two main characters have no chemistry? the only thing these boys like about each other is that they're both hot. that's it.
2. how dare you compare yourself to the princess diaries? write a shitty book, sure, but leave anne hathaway and julie andrews out of it.
3. the use of "six-pack." say something else. anything else, really.
4. jamie johnson? that's the best name you could come up with?
5. "sexy" was used in an unironic context.

i truly wish to waste no more time on this book. i only finished it because i refused to be defeated by a book so atrociously written.

This book is….

…going straight to the unhaul pile 😬

I had such high hopes for this book because I heard good things, I loved If This Gets Out, and it sounded like such a cute queer princess diaries like story.
But the writing just drove me absolutely insane!

As I said, the story is cute! a little bit of the princess diaries but make it queer… And the book started out good, but my God, the writing… It was so repetitive! I would literally find the same sentence twice within five lines of each other… during one scene it was mentioned three times that Jamie‘s parents had gone to bed… all on one page!!
and the chapters are short, which is something I absolutely love! But sometimes they would end so abruptly, which would make sense because we switch POV’s with each chapter, but the next chapter then would pick up days later and not connect to the abrupt ending at all!

urgh, i’m just sad now because i wanted to love it! 😫
