The first of Sally Rooney’s books I’ve read, and definitely not the last. I like the exploration of humanity and our flaws. While there wasn’t a “plot” per se, it was still very interesting to read about the mundane interactions of the characters and how their relationships with each other push and pull.

I really wanted to love this, but unfortunately the story fell very short. The pacing seemed very inconsistent, the different points of views of the characters were hard to follow, so at times it was difficult to understand who was talking within the story. I also felt this book was too short for all the characters to be fully developed, and all their nuances and growth to be fleshed out. I left the story feeling as if there was more detail that needed to be added, overall this book unfortunately was not very memorable.

This is the second Sally Rooney book I’ve read and both novels have captured the dense knot of human miscommunication so accurately that it’s painful to read. But also a relief.

I found the characters and relationships compelling. Through them, the story got at truths that simple statements can’t capture as brightly.

I see here that many people disliked the email exchanges, but I enjoyed them. It was interesting to hear the characters’ big ideas and then to see the minutiae of their days and personal entanglements.

And best of all, I really enjoyed the way this story closed.

Also I highly recommend the audiobook, the narrator was SUPERB and captured each character so perfectly.

A book of long letters between the protagonists that indulge in narcissism, existential angst and masochistic tendencies. Hypocritical commentary on communism and capitalism from the judgemental characters that never try to do anything to improve the society they complain about. The dynamic between Simon and Eileen was so uncomfortable to read about!

Now that i have finished it, looking back on it, it doesn’t seem like a stand out story, but it just resonated and spoke to a deep part of me and i genuinely love it so dearly. I can’t wait to read it again.
