sapphic cyberpunk, we love to see it!!
jokes aside, “Gearbreakers” is a decent debut novel, featuring some of my fav tropes (enemies to lovers and found family). it was a bit confusing at times (esp in the beginning) and i sometimes could not really follow the characters’ actions. but i also don’t live in a post-apocalyptic dystopian world with mods so who am i to judge?
generally, think it’s quite well written, entertaining and the pacing is good—i definitely wanted to keep reading!
3.5-4 stars. :)

I found Gearbreakers to be extremely "fine." I thought the premise was super intriguing with the sapphic mecha dystopian plotline, but I feel like it fell pretty flat for me.
I will caveat this by saying, I do think some of my gripes with this book are personal preference. Starting with the story felt very juvenile. Yes I know it is YA and the characters are teenagers, but I found the whiny teen angst aspects to be a bit much given the stakes at what was going on in the world. Which honestly, was hard to follow the world building was severely lacking. There was much more 'tell' than 'show' and overall it just felt underdeveloped. I didn't understand the motivation behind the war at all outside of it fit the narrative to put the characters into.
I did appreciate that the romance was a slow burn, given the enemies to lovers background. And I did enjoy the found family aspect as well. I feel like I didn't connect with Sona and Eris that deeply but again, that could have been because of them being so young.
Overall I would say this book was okay. It wasn't bad, but didn't live up to my expectations which was a bummer. I do think that Zoe Hana Mikuta had some lovely writing, but the story felt simultaneously surface level and confusingly vague.
