Beautifully written and amazing world building. Its a hefty read but I found it worth it. Loved all the pieces of the story clicking into place.

Sooo.
I'm kinda sad I only listened to this as entertaining while sick in bed.

After I had it on my wishlist for a long time and almost accidentaly ordered it twice based of an arc Review AND a coworker saying this is close to dethroning ToG for her, I was so excited for this.

And in the beginning I thought this was gonna be a year-highlight.

Don't get me wrong, I loved it!!
But in the end, there was some emotional connection missing for me. This could be entirely based on my state of mind atm, so I am really excited to read the next book(s) and will recommend this to anyone who'll listen.

Phwoar! Loved the fantasy and potential stories here. This is more fantasy than romantasy.

Banter was often fun. Some of the lyrical writing worked (especially with the prologue).  The volume of writing attempting to be lyrical and floral in the first person POV chapters were too clunky. you don’t see enough difference in the head narratives of the raeve and Kaan povs.

some plot choices of miscommunication and holding back missed opportunity for the characters to collaborate and find ways around the villains. This is a common issue with books in these genres.

I have enough notes on  the writing choices annoyed me that it drops the writing down.

Carnal knowledge ? Eloquently dressed ? The characters insults got tied when it’s about small brains and small cocks.

Bloated similes and metaphors that aren’t clear to understand. @morelemonheads on Reddit described it well : “ the writing so often like an upside down triangle: rumination paragraph, summary of that paragraph, shorter summary, two words, one word. Hundreds of times she follows that formula in her writing. Irritating.”

*

I was annoyed by the publishing choices of the glossary and especially the family tree. I accidentally clocked the spoiler info when I was trying to check a term in the glossary. this spoiled two important plot points,

Overall, these flaws dont diminish my eagerness to read this book again. The writing

More reflections to add after my initial book hangover.

I listened to this book first and foremost. It might have better to physically read this. I felt a bit lost up until half way through. I do want to mention I loved the world that this book took place in. It would make for a cinematic movie. The way the dragons were explained and the world building was good.

The main character was driving me insane for most of the book. 😞
There was no growth and her anger seemed so unhinged at times. Like she’s smart and powerful but her smart remarks were not thought out well. A lot of repetitive usage of words. It all seemed rushed when it came to the writing. The use of the word fuck seemed so out of place BUT maybe it’s because I listened to the book. 🤷🏼‍♀️ idk. The main male character was cool but I felt so bad for him.  I would read the next book when it comes out because I want to know how this war and all the secrets play out.

2.75 stars (ish?).

This one is a difficult one for me to rate because I actually really enjoyed the general overarching storyline, but I think the execution left a lot to be desired. The first half had me thinking this could be a 3.5 to 4 star book, but then the second half dragged so much I had to drop the rating.

I think the book lost a lot of momentum at the tribe scenes about halfway through the book. I also think the reader was left in the dark too long with answers, given we had pieced together the "what" about halfway through but didn't get the "why" until the end of the book - and this is a 500+ page book! I felt like we went in circles a little bit towards the end.

I liked the original dynamic between Raeve and Kaan, but it sort of became bland the further we went on. I also don't really think he stood out a lot in the way of romantasy MMCs - he was tall, dark-haired, chiselled with a huge 🍆, and was very protective, almost veering possessive at times, over the FMC. At least he was genuinely nice for most of the story, though, and was a consent king (pun intended). Same character, different font. Raeve was a bit more interesting, as was her story, but I would have liked to see more character development throughout this book as she felt like she ended the book in the same place as at the start - stab first, ask questions later.

The writing started out pretty decent but the flowery prose got too over-the-top by the end and the word use got repetitive. How many times can one say "cleft" in a book? 36 times apparently. "Maw" also had it's fair share of page time, though it wasn't quite as obvious. I also don't understand the reasons why the names of some things were changed and not others. Why call it a "dae" when you can just say "day"?

I also would've liked more dragons.

Though I have said a lot of the negatives, I thought the premise of the story was interesting and I feel like if this and been shorter and more focused on the core storyline, it would've been far better. It just felt a little all over the place, with a lot going on but also not a lot. But I obviously seem to be in the minority with this opinion so take what you will from this review.

For me, this book was the epitome of “trust the process”. I was so confused to begin with, as the world and the characters are so rich and you need time to dig your teeth into them. Also the language was so descriptive and beautiful. I fell in love with the characters and their intricacies. I laughed out loud, shouted and swooned. And the 🌶️! Perfectly placed in the story, well written and 🔥. 5⭐️ from me
