Learnt a lot but was probably a bit too binary (introvert vs extrovert) for me without nuances for neurodivergency
At library while reading this book:
Man: What are you reading?
Me: It's a book called Quiet.
Man: Oh, I get your point.
Me: No, it's a book about introverts.
Although I probably should have just let him believe I was shutting him down since he then proceeded to talk to me for way too long. Ironically, Quiet is about introverts defending just such periodic needs to be quiet and alone. 25 to 50% people are introverts in America and Cain talks about how they can survive in a culture where extroverts are lauded. I really enjoyed her journey from explaining how extroversion helped lead to the 2008 financial meltdown (promotion of fast-talking risk-takers who ignored the quiet, warning types), discussion of the popularity of nerds in Asian schools, to personality formation and how introverts can sincerely put on a extrovert mask when required. I had this book checked out for only a short time as it's on demand, so I still want to go back and reread parts and get the statistics and facts more lodged in my head. I would give it 5 stars except every now and then it sounded too much like a 60 minutes report.

Wow. This is the book that I needed 15 years ago. I’ve spent most of my life thinking something was wrong with me but this book really opened my eyes to my own true self. I loved how deep she went into the psychology of personality. There are so many reasons why I am introverted and the author really laid everything out on the table with research defending the claims. I highly highly recommend this book to anybody that has ever struggled with self esteem because of who they simply are.

I want to give this book to every boss that I have ever had! Thank you for captioning what has been stuck in the back of my mind for so long! "We know from myths and fairytales that there are many different kinds of powers in this world. One child is give a light saber, another, a wizards education. The trick is not to amass all of the different kinds of available power, but to use well the kind that you have been granted."

I started this book to learn more about my introvert husband, friends, family and coworkers. That was achieved and I learned so much about myself, an obvious extrovert.
As a result of reading this book, I have changed the way in which I work. As an analyst, I have more introvert coworkers and I was trying to copy their styles. I’ve been listening to my loud music (on headphones) while sitting in a common space. I get more work done and come home more refreshed.
Excellent read. Highly recommend.

This book was recommended to me so I could better understand the introverts in my life. As an extrovert it helped me a lot to not take peoples silence personally. It helps to understand why people need 1:1 time with me and small group hangouts. I think I’m getting better at listening. I’m grateful for this knowledge so I can be a better friend and partner and teacher.
Moderate: Misogyny
I cannot say enough good things about this book. Cain breaks down the very broad world of extroversion and introversion, while discussing highly sensitive people, in depth. She covers so many bases I had to put this book down for awhile to process it. I thought I had a really good grasp on what it means for me to be an introvert but she brought up a few things I have never thought of or reactions I have that I attribute to anxiety and not 1st introversion. She last chapters on teaching, parenting, and relationships were especially enlightening for me. Read it!
