read in conjunction with Tolkien’s translation. it’s very cool to read a story so old that inspired my all time favorite movie. this version of the text is much more accessible and almost acted as my translation to Tolkien’s translation. it was much more straightforward (lacking the lyricism and poetic nature of the other) and read closer to fiction. i enjoyed it. but if you’re looking for something truer to original form i would recommend Tolkien’s.

yes yes this is a story of upholding chivalry and virtue yadi yada but also, everyone is in love with gawain and i’m convinced our beloved anon author inserted gay subtext on purpose thank you for coming to my ted talk

[will probably make a review based on the comparison of the movie and the book at a later date!]

This is a great edition for someone who enjoyed the 2021 film and wants to either engage with the source material for the first time, or revisit it after some time away. O'Donoghue's translation is lively and accessible, and the foreword by Lowery offers some insight into his approach towards the film adaptation.
