I think I really like the way Kara Thomas writes her characters and the relationships between them. Oftentimes, it's hard for me to empathise with the emotions in books, but I have no trouble with this author.
"Little Monsters" was a 5, "That Weekend" was a 1, and I didn't know what expect from this book seeing the ratings others gave it. Now I know that it's truly those books in 3.7-3.9 range that become my all-time favorites.
The story is sad and touching, tragic and sharp, hopeful and despairing. As a reader, you get to see pieces of puzzle slowly come together into one big detailed picture. There are so many threads, but the most enticing part of this book is family relationships, the magnitude of feelings that they can make you experience.
"Long Bright River" by Liz Moore and this book show the stories of feeling too much, and that's why they are some of my favorites.

Chose this one based on the synopsis. Kept me guessing; would have liked the ending to have more closure,  it overall it was good.

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley. Thank you for the early read.

There was a lot going on in this book but it was well written. I didn't connect very well with the main character only because I haven't experienced any loss like that character. The book had me very hooked on wanting to know what happens. I quickly read this and loved it.

Kara Thomas makes her mark in the adult thriller genre.
I enjoyed a few of her YA thrillers, so I was super excited to see what she could do with an adult book.
This was so, so wild. It really stood out against other thrillers i’ve read that follow the same sort of theme. It’s typical for thrillers to be about something relating to an unsolved case, and small town but Kara Thomas outdid it.
I love reading about an unhinged main character in these books, and Sam was definitely that. She wasn’t afraid of anything, and was going to find the truth no matter what it took.
The side characters were good. Truthfully, there were a lot. I did forget who was who a time or two, but I felt like the author did a good job reminding the audience of who it was - if they hadn’t been mentioned in a while.
The ending was So sad. It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting, or wanting - honestly. It makes sense though. Especially when we see who Sam is as a character, and everything she had went through.
I would have loved to see an epilogue set 6 months to even a year later.
I definitely didn’t know where there this book was going in terms of plot twist. I thought it was figured out a time or two, but it just kept having twist after twist.
If you enjoy more small town secrecy, everyone is a bad person, drama esque thrillers - this is one you need to add to your tbr.
thank you netgalley for the arc!

What a rollercoaster! In every possible sense. This book keeps moving at a neck breaking pace, and definitely keeps the reader engaged. However, I found that in the second half the twists used to keep the reader guessing become too convoluted and tiresome.

Overall, it was still a positive experience, since the frustration I felt at times with some of the author choices were more than compensated by the engaging overarching plot. I have to acknowledge that if I had not forced to stop myself I would have read through the night until finishing this the first time I opened it.

I will definitely read more works from this author.
