I enjoyed this a lot! Emily Carroll's art style is right up my alley, I thought every panel was stunning. And the vibes were a perfect blend of creepy and whimsical. After I finished the first three stories, I was thinking about how each ending was written. As a collection, Through the Woods feels like a group of ghost stories told around a campfire. The endings cut sharp and abrupt, leaving a lot to the imagination. But also leaving a little bit to be desired, because I adore these stories and I want them to continue.  The suspense isnt a bad thing, just part of it.

Really liked this read.
First of all it is visually great.
Second of all it was the perfect amount of horror/spooky for me. It was mysterious and a little scary but in a way that's really nice to read (especially for Halloween/in the fall or winter). The short stories were varied but each one was captivating. They were fast paced but didn't end leaving you unsatisfied (and if it ended in mystery it fit the story well).
I got sucked in and read everything at once but it was also a pretty quick read which was nice and perfect for my reading mood.

I've wanted to read this for a very long time and I'm glad I finally got to it. I think I would have liked it more when I was younger, but even now it was a pretty good time. The art is great, and it was quite creepy. If you're looking for something short to read this spooky season, I recommend it.

SO glad StoryGraph recommended this to me! If you're like me and go bananas for Over the Garden Wall but are also into darker stories, this is the book for you. I could not get enough of any of the stories, and I found it especially compelling that most, if not all, of them were ultimately metaphors for loss or coping with it. TLDR; this is a fantastic book and you should read it!!!

much better than my previous jaunt into emily carroll’s work but my primary criticism remains: emily carroll is a gifted artist and a mediocre storyteller. this collection did have a better narrative than when i arrived at the castle, but nothing stood out for me personally.

I loved the art style, it was truly beautiful and haunting. But the stories fell short for me. I wanted to love them but their endings often left me disappointed/dissatisfied and felt incomplete.

This was a quick, fun read that I e-checked out from my library on a whim and read in one sitting. I thought the illustrations were easily the best part of the book. The colors and style were beautiful and probably are even more so in person. The stories themselves were short, interesting little fairytales gone wrong, and I enjoyed all of them. I wouldn't say that most of them were particularly scary; I think there was only one story that had an ending that got me.

I think this is a fun read and I would recommend it, but probably only if you borrowed it from your library. The stories didn't have enough substance to merit me wanting to buy this or check it out again, though I do think if there's a sequel I would be interested in checking it out and reading it too.
