Surprisingly engaging "novel" about the history of the lumber industry and forestry in Canada and the US (with a couple of jaunts to New Zealand). Less a novel and more like fleshed out genealogy research, the book follows the descendants of a couple of a couple of indentured servants that arrive in New France (Canada) in the 17th C. Follows generation after generation, their relationship to timber, the timber industry, forestry, conservation. Well written and captivating; there is no plot per se but it doesn't matter, it feels like you're perusing the biography of a company and get brief glimpses into the lives of the owners.

Did not finish. Just can't get into this. Sorry, Norm.

Too long and didactically dry, but vivid detail of periods. Needs an editor.

This is the book that got me into reading a few years back, and having just finished it for a second time with a better idea of what is and isn’t good, I still love this book. Annie creates a beautiful world and gives a new perspective on the beautiful life of forests.
