Listened to the audiobook.
I knew this was a short book but I didn’t realize that it was a book told from multiple perspectives and I evidently got distracted when the narrator perspective switched characters because I was incredibly confused for a little while.

There were some remarkable stories here but I found the book as a whole slow going at times. It was also quite easy to confuse which storyline went with which character or family. On the audiobook, I enjoyed how the narrator read the sections devoted to the younger generation (mostly stories 5 - 12), as I thought she brought out some of the underlying humour, and I might have missed that otherwise.

4.5 stars. It's more like a collection of short stories cut up and woven together. Still, they were very engaging stories about the lives of these women. I think it was well written.

Best quality book! If you're a mother or a daughter, you must read this. It transcends being a book about China (which it is) and touches on the common nerve of all mother-daughter relationships. "Your mother is in your bones!"
