Absolutely beautiful prose. But so much cruelty and ugliness. I think that Hungry Ghosts may be a work of great virtuosity but it was so harsh that I don't want to reread it to confirm.

Hosein has created a vivid and haunting story about 1940s Trinidad. I’m thoroughly impressed by the way in which he brought the atmosphere and landscape to life.
This is a deeply sad and cautionary tale about trauma, loss, family and money.
Mild spoiler, but the title of this book is slightly misleading. This isn’t that type of horror or supernatural story. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy descriptive prose and stories about families navigating through struggles. This book touches on themes of racism, classism and poverty.

Graphic: Animal cruelty
Moderate: Child death, Sexual violence
A powerful read that kept my attention throughout, and was full of unexpected twists. I was interested in learning more about Trinidad, especially in this time period, and the "hungry ghosts"/pretas theme harkened back to my read of "The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida." Heads up about the dogs :(

A sweeping novel of epic proportions that occasionally got lost in its own world.
