This is the first self-help book that I've ever read so I don't have any other points of reference, but generally speaking, I do not know whether I would have appreciated this book the same way if I hadn't followed Dan for +10 years as a youtuber already. I really think it was a good thing I listened to the audiobook, if I have to be honest, which is superbly produced. I think it had a lot of lovely and reflective and useful moments. Some of the exercises I already know will help me in the future and Dan shared a lot of affirmations that were really nice to hear, especially since I'm still flailing around sometimes to understand and navigate life. I loved the personal touches that Dan brought in at times as it not only helped relatability, but it also allowed me to understand one of the key figures of my teenage years even further.
However, sometimes that "relatability" ventured into directions that felt a little too unserious and, as I have seen other people express it, a little immature. I guess, without necessarily wanting a memoir or anything, I had hoped for a slightly more intimate window into Dan's personal experiences with mental health and his road to recovery. It is also inevitable to acknowledge that some of Dan's statements and affirmations, as well intended as they may have been, bordered on privileged without really acknowledging the reality that some people face, especially in minority groups.
After all, though, I think Dan made a really valuable guide that truly radiates the hope and intention that he wanted to bring across to others, and for his younger self. It just may not be the book you would want to pick up if you don't enjoy his general outlook on life and tone or need something more extensive than a basic guide.

You know those times where you're like I know all of this, but need someone to tell you and remind you anyways? This is that book. I wish 14 year old me had this.
The audibook was so good, I loved the moments where Daniel would give you time to breathe and meditate. The only self help book I've ever decided to read!
