Back when You Will Get Through This Night was announced, I was among the first to preorder the book as a long-time danisnotonfire fan. I finally got around to giving it a read and, overall, I feel this book serves its purpose by introducing useful strategies for someone at the start of their mental health journey. It cannot and does not cover everything mental health-related, but it does contain some valuable tools and reminders that could come in handy for a reader struggling with anxiety or depression.

This book is simple and straightforward. Dan speaks of his struggle with his mental health and life experiences, which offers a sense of solidarity in a topic that too often feels isolating. He balances humor and seriousness to make a guide both relatable and sincere, a trait familiar to readers following his online presence. I enjoyed the narration, and at times it felt more like just talking to a friend who wants the best for you than reading a self-help book. Though the exercises and tips were mostly familiar, I still found myself bookmarking several of them to return to when I need a reminder of how to refocus my attention in a dark headspace. Sometimes it's helpful to hear something you know from a different perspective - and validating, too, especially when it comes to mental health.

Something I would have liked to see more of is the science behind the themes presented. You Will Get Through This Night was written with input from a licensed professional, and there are research and statistics sprinkled throughout the book. I think this was intentionally kept more sparse to aid in the book's accessibility and relatability, so this is more of a personal preference, but I feel more direct professional input would supplement Dan's narrative nicely. All in all, I think this is a solid starting point for anyone looking to implement healthy exercises and coping strategies into their everyday life.

I am a long time fan of Dan and I am passionate about mental health. So, reading this was a no brainer. It was a quick read and had great information. But it didn’t really bring anything new to the table for me. Which is why I’m rating it three stars…

DID NOT FINISH: 29%

Quite inspiring for a down period, but felt a little basic for what I was looking to learn about mental health. Would have liked more personal anecdotes - not for creepy fan reasons, but because I think it makes the sometimes quite abstract concepts (especially strategies for recovery) easier to understand and implement yourself.

I actually really liked this book. Against an Dan's wishes, I did read it cover to cover, and just highlighted and bookmarked the important things I wanted to go back to instead. I think it will end up really helping me. Be

On one hand I enjoyed it, because it’s Dan. On the other hand, it would be absolutely *demolished* on If Books Could Kill x)
Cons:
* It’s really basic. There’s nothing here that’s not everywhere else in the mental health world
* There are no sources - and while it was written with the help of a psychiatrist, Dan himself is not a mental health professional in any way
* I’m not sure how enjoyable it would be for someone not a fan of Dan (or at least this brand of millennial humour)
* It’s really tone deaf at times (suggesting a police station as a safe space for example) and seem to be targeted to relatively privileged people who’s problems are mainly solvable and/or mild (if it’s not the only advice is to talk to a professional which not everyone has access to or is helped by)
* There’s also a full paragraph about toxic masculinity and how men are affected by the patriarchy but extremely little about how women are literally the main victims of it
* The advice is very generalised and doesn’t really take neurodivergence into account (at one point he says “we all have the same brain” which is just wrong)

Pros:
* It’s really basic! All the basics are covered in a simple way
* If you love Dan it’s a lot more fun than a regular self help book
* Most of the advice is alright for most people

I realise it looks like a one star review but honestly, in the world of self help books it really isn’t the worst one out there and at the end of the day I did enjoy myself. I do think though that it would’ve been better to have two separate books, one about his own struggles and one written by someone with actual credentials

Un gran libro para introducir de manera general la psicología, con humor y chispa.

This is my second time reading it and I found it incredibly helpful still. I listened to the audiobook and it was really good at getting me into a positive mindset. I felt like I was taking care of myself by listening to it, and more hopeful in general. My biggest take away this time is that there are things I can do in the now to help me, things I can do when I'm feeling better to help and long-term things I can do in general. The part about making my environment more pleasant too was helpful, so I'm going to try and put my personal stamp on places more.
Daniel is really good at explaining these things and I found his sense of humour comforting. The end ASMR part had me smiling it was just so ridiculous. During the five-minute task timer I was frantically trying to finish my cleaning haha. And it worked! The positive affirmations part was a bit repetitive, we had already heard those twice before.
I really want to get this in physical form so I can use it when needed. Overall, it was the quick audiobook re-listen I needed, and I'm sure it'll continue to be helpful.
