Believe it or not, I read this right after The Vincent Boys. So naturally, I have not quite come down from the scintillating high of reading such an awesome book. Breathe was Abbi Glines' first published work. I'd recommend reading this first before The Vincent Boys. The stories are not related in any way; I just think that this book is a good introduction to Abbi's works. After reading both of Gline's books, I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to Existence's release.
Abbi Glines' debut featured a sort of rags-to-riches story about a girl who lived her whole life poor. Sadie's mother seemed to be reluctant to grow up so she'd had to be the one to take care of her. Her life lessons include being smart about boys and keeping people far away enough so she'd never have to depend on anyone but herself. With her mother being pregnant, Sadie had no choice but to take over her mother's job of a housekeeper for the rich. When she found out who her employer was, she needed to reiterate to herself that food, rent, and a sibling on the way was more important than to be caught up in Jax Stone's world. Unfortunately, being involved with Jax proved to be inevitable.
This was such a sweet story; with believable characters and albeit, predictable plot. I'm not going to take anything away from Abbi's writing; I thought she did a marvellous job, considering this was her debut.
My grievance was the less than impressive Jax Stone. He certainly didn't fit the rockstar typecast. I expected a bit more angst from this guy, perhaps some moody tantrum throwing. But this guy was zen as zen can be. So much so that he felt underdeveloped. I guess it's difficult to bring more personality into a cast when the book is being narrated by another. Also, some of his dialogues were...a bit cheesy. Perhaps it was the song writer in him, but I found myself cringing at some of the stuff he'd said and his song lyrics were just as fromage heavy.
I'm also disappointed with the resolution of the conflict. It felt a bit rushed to me. I've always been fond of grovelling males in a novel and had expected one here. Sadly, Sadie accepted Jax's reappearance in her life quite easily.
I think this is still a good read for those looking for contemporary romance. If you can get over the cheese, you'll definitely enjoy this.

Abbi Glines is one self-published author I knew I had to check out. Everyone raves about her books, Simon Pulse picked up some of them, and they’re contemporary. I figured I’d join the majority and she’d have another fan. Sadly that was so not the case.
Breathe is one of the most terribly written books I have ever read. The writing was horrendous. Everything was “he said, she said, he did, she did” and pretty much no description. It was similar to stuff I read in middle school when I was critiquing other classmates work. Also, who doesn’t use contractions? I got so annoyed with this book because there were almost no contractions! People don’t say “do not, can not, will not” they say “don’t, can’t, won’t.” I spent the whole time reading fixing words in my head because I couldn’t read it as they were written.
Then there’s the dialogue. Holy crap. Breathe has some of the cheesiest dialogue I have ever read and this is coming from a hardcore romance fan. I had to stop myself from laughing out loud at how Sadie and Jax talked to each other. No teenage guy talks to a girl like that! And I didn’t even find it romantic, I found it hilarious.
As for the characters themselves, they were all too perfect. Jax, Sadie, Marcus, Ms. Mary, Mr. Greg, Preston, none of them had any flaws! Sadie was made out to be this innocent, naïve, girl and I guess it was true but it seemed a little fake to me. She also went around acting like she wasn’t pretty and all the guys were all over her. It seemed like she was begging for compliments every time she would tell Jax or Marcus that she wasn’t really that pretty. Jax was this big rock star but he didn’t have a famous bone in his body. He was just a normal guy trying to get by. Yeah right. He was way too perfect to ever exist in real life.
The story was kind of nonexistent. It was all just about Jax and Sadie’s romance and then there was some turmoil thrown in at the end for good measure. Can’t have things be too easy you know. Everything about this book was just really dull and that goes for the story as well.
Overall, I don’t recommend Breathe at all. I had to force myself to get through it and after reading it I feel like I wasted a few hours of my time. I may try another of Abbi Glines’ books before I give up but I will definitely be going in with low expectations.

Abbi Glines is one of my favorite authors. I’ve never read a thing she’s written and not wanted more! I’ve read the Sea Breeze series in the past but I’m going back and reading them again because I love it so much!
This is easily the cheesiest book I have ever read. I have never rolled my eyes so hard or cringed so much. I actually can deal with a little cheese in a book if it's a good story. This was just too much.
The main female character thinks she isn't attractive. She thinks she has a bad personality. Everyone else in the book seems to think the opposite...especially hot guys, ofcourse. She is naive to the point of ridiculousness. She has never had a boyfriend, but decides her love interest in this book will be the only man she will ever love after a couple of weeks. Her love interest refers to her as his air. He claims when she breathes it makes him shiver. He says many other nausea inducing things thoughout the story. This book has the worst sex scene I have ever read. I mean, I read it three times because I thought I had to be missing something. Normally, I wouldn't care about this, except that this one is soo bad I just had to mention it. I really don't like writing reviews that are mostly negative so I'm going to stop right there.
Despite all the problems I had with the story, I will give Abbi Glines another chance. Abbi Glines is a well liked author, and I heard that this was her first published book. I know it's possible her other books will be better. I purchased several books in this series at the same time that I bought this one. For that reason, I intend to read at least another installment in this series before giving up. Another reason I will give it another try is I have read one other book by this author; The Vincent Boys. While I didn't love it, it was better than Breathe.
This book did have a few good things going for it. The author's writing style kept me reading. I never found myself bored at any point. I also liked the dynamic between the main character, Ms. Mary, and the gardener. I found it touching. I even teared up a little in the hospital scene. This book had potential and I really wish it would have worked better for me.

this book had me rolling my eyes and laughing at the parts where im supposed to be swooning I love abbi glines Rosemary beach series but this is unbearably cheesetastic
I am going to start this off by saying I LOVED abbi glines Rosemary Beach series! but this book just didn't do it for me. I knew going into it that the book was a little YA but people said it gets more NA the more the series goes on... but that didn't stop the disappointment for me :(
I am glad that I got the version that has added Jax's POV because I think I would have been bored to death just listening to Sadie drone on and on...
I will continue the series, but only because I already purchased the first 3 books. I have learned a valuable lesson which is... do NOT purchase more than one book in a series until you read at lest the first book.
I am sad because I REALLY wanted to LOVE this book. I pray the series gets better for me...

Book #50 Read in 2014
Breathe by Abbi Glines (YA)
This is the first book in a young adult "smut" series, for lack of a better term. It reminded me of a 50 Shades of Gray for teenagers....but a bit naughtier than what I remember reading as a teen. Sadie gets a summer job as a maid for a rich family; the owner turns out to be young rock star Jaz. The two connect instantly and begin a relationship while trying to maintain privacy. Of course they are found out and their cover is blown. This book was a quick read and the characters were interesting but about halfway through it could have wrapped up for me. But I stuck with it so I could see that happy ever after in the end.

I really liked this book - thought I wish the reunion between the two was a little long and not so rushed, I also wished she didn't just forgive him so easily - I wanted her to put up more of a fight idk it just seemed too rushed towards the end
