A sprawling family novel centered on a dying patriarch throwing one last birthday party. There are a lot of characters, and a bit of a confusing chronology, as there's a lot of reminiscing and dipping back into old family stories. I kind of just leaned into it, and it was a fun, atmospheric read. I've seen other reviewers compare it to wandering around a huge family reunion, without worrying too much about the exact details of when each story took place and who is going to pop back up again.

This book was a little hard to get into but, my god, once I did it, was like my heart cracked wide open. The De La Cruz family will be forever in my heart.
The first 100 pages were slow for me, but this one just kept getting better as I read.
