I'm actually giving it five stars because it was such a well written and fun adventure.

This is what i would recommend children who have read Harry potter and wanted something similar with magic and fun characters and adventure and a new world to explore and a good tempo.

The images are also brilliant and now I wish all books, for children and also adults, used images like this. It made it so much more fun to see what the next picture would be, but also it helped me vision the magical places and animals they met.

I've almost never seen anyone talk about this one and that is sad because it was really great. Fun, a bit scary, exciting, and also a little sad.

The writing is great, the images are so beautiful, the pacing is good. I can't really see anything bad with it. Maybe it's too bad it's so long since I think that is the main issue why I never see any children loaning it at my library. Gonna push it!

Fantasy artist/writer Tony DiTerlizzi (co-author of The Spiderwick Chronicles; I'm more familiar with him as a Magic: The Gathering artist) writes and illustrates this story of a twelve-year-old girl who has lived her entire life in an underground sanctuary with an AI caretaker. Eva Nine has been training on a series of holographic simulations to prepare for the day when she will finally walk on the Earth's surface.

Unfortunately, the simulations have everything wrong, and when circumstances force Eva Nine to leave her shelter earlier than intended, the world she discovers is nothing like what she had been prepared for.

Eva and the small supporting cast she ends up gathering around her are all fun characters, and the process of them growing into a family is really the heart of this book. The author fills the world with a fascinating array of creatures that are alien, but also familiar. The use of technology in the story is clever, and the interactions between human and machine intelligence make for an interesting mother (or rather MUTHR)/daughter dynamic.

Eva is resourceful, brave, and relentless when it comes to defending her new family. Her search for the one strange clue about her past (a fun literary reference) only gets started in this book, and much of the mystery of the setting is left for future volumes in the series to explore.

The one weakness I found in the story were the villains. The main antagonist is pretty generic. Other characters introduced showed more potential and more complexity, she hopefully this element of the story will improve as the series continues.

I have the sequel on hand, and I'm definitely looking forward to revisiting Eva Nine's world.

This was so absurdly good and entertaining!! I can't believe this book isn't more popular than it is. Great characters, excellent writing, and a story that leaves you wanting for more. Tony DiTerlizzi is good at what he does. A new favorite.

This took me forever to get through. Not because it's bad, it's not. But 3/4 of the way through there was a resolution of sorts, and I didn't feel like reading past it. The illustrations are lovely, but I don't think I'll finish the series.

I honestly bought the book for the illustrations but DeTerlizzi has a way of bringing his art to life with an original - and fascinating - story.
