The characters are their own people and they stick to their personalities well, the plot line was great, very creative, but the villian is very flat: only real personality is money and power.

This review is coming off of what is probably my 5th or so reread of this book. Flamecaster has always been my least favorite in the series, but it’s still solid. I can’t help but notice the plot holes, (for example, in this book Destin says his mother is already dead, but in Stormcaster she’s said to be still alive) but these would probably not be noticeable to someone reading for the first time.
This series is criminally underrated in my opinion. The characters are the highlight. Even though Ash and Jenna are my least favorites in the series, they’re still well written. I also enjoyed all the court politics and such within this book.
Flamecaster is a bit slow in the beginning, but picks up pace as you get past the backstory. It also sets up the events of the sequel pretty well.
Also, Flamecaster does a good job making you curious about the other characters: Destin Karn and Lila Barrowhill. They are both brief POV characters in this book, but especially Destin leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Upon rereading, I can appreciate how his later-revealed backstory was hinted at throughout this book.
The epilogue also remains one of my favorite chapters in the whole series. when I first read this book, it completely floored me. My initial dislike for Evan was turned on its head. Very good setup for the future books.
overall, though nostalgia does bias me a bit, i think Flamecaster holds up very well as a YA fantasy. It is reminiscent of Game of Thrones, but with a lot less violence and misogyny. Read this series if you like court politics, war, magic, mysteries, and unexpected romances. These books deserve more popularity!
