As a The Mummy lover, I loved the setting of this book! Any treasure hunting plot sucks me right in. A lot happens in this book! While lots of different events occur, the pacing is a little slow in the first half. The FMC’s inner monologue starts to get repetitive. It picks up in the second half and the last 20% is a wild ride (even though it’s a bit predictable)! I loved the chemistry between the love interests. And the yearning between them? Dellllicioussss. 🤌🏼The Epilogue had me like 😳. I definitely need to find out what happens next! There is some kissing / touching in this book but no open-door spice.
4 🌟 because the pacing was a little all over the place in the beginning and it took me a second to really connect with the story.

While this story sucked me in pretty hard, I felt super frustrated by pretty much every interpersonal relationship, and wanted a bit more from the actual history and scene/setting details. The ending had me seething!

I was a bit let down by this book. While the reviews have been all over the place, I was really hoping for something more from this book with its mix of an alternate history, mystery, fantasy, and magical realism. I usually enjoy books more when I connect with the characters, even if they’re not my favorites. But that wasn’t the case here. The characters felt a bit flat and, for the most part, not very likable. Inez, the main character, came across as spoiled and entitled, even though she went to Egypt searching for her missing parents. She should have been a more sympathetic character. And her relationship with Witford lacked any chemistry. There was also a character introduced late in the book whose only purpose seemed to be to be killed off. Despite these flaws, there were a few points that kept me hooked enough to want to read the second book in this duology.

As an avid fan of The Mummy, I was hooked by the comp alone. :) What the River Knows was a delightful adventure, equal parts thrilling and delicious.
At 17 years old, Inez Olivera discovers that her parents have died in Egypt. Having lived under the care of her aunt for most of her life, Inez has longed to see Egypt--the place that so captivated her parents that they abandoned her in Argentina. Inez decides to travel alone to discover what happened to her parents, reconnect with her uncle Ricardo and seek answers to her many questions.
The tension and banter between Inez and Whit is chef's kiss, and I look forward to reading the sequel to see how Ibanez resolves that cliffhanger!
I'm giving What the River Knows 4 stars because I think Inez's age didn't seem appropriate for the story, which pulled me out a few times. I also didn't understand why the death of a certain character (toward the end of the story) was necessary. That said, I loved the exploration of Egypt, the mysteries and twists, and Inez's spunk.
