I loved this mainly for its Egyptian setting than anything else.
The romance felt forced to begin with as the two MC’s have banter and it works well but that switch to comrades to being interested romantically didn’t feel natural at the start but then it did flow nicely and there’s was tension.
The plot could have been better as I was anticipating more threats and action to happen while this is more of a slow but not quite cozy adventure.
I knew it was a duology but the book felt like it had the potential to wrap up and then didn’t. Again that shift at the end didn’t feel natural to the story.
Overall really enjoyed but it could have been better.

The characters made me genuingly angry and I found myself being irritable outside reading this book because of it. I know I will sound like I am victim blaming when I say this but all these people who find Whit, the cheating alcoholic, cute explains why so many women end up with their shitty partners. He has no redeeming qualities besides being hot (apparently). Tragic backstories aren't redemption guys. I can't stand annoying assholes, I know apparently people like them but I don't. I couldn't care less. Inez is childish and lacks actual motivation. She is an insufferable teenager who follows only her emotions thats for sure. Her parents disappearence explained why she went to Egypt but everything else was so illogical. Why does nobody talk in this book? There is literally no reason to withhold information on her parents death. Why do we even care about them if they abandoned Inez for all this time? I thought the writing at least was otherwise good and there was clearly research put into the history and culture of the time, I love this time period and setting. I just didn't enjoy this at all.
Inez Olivera lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina with her aunt and two cousins. Her parents spend half the year in Argentina and the other half in Egypt. Inez’s parents fund her Uncle Ricardo’s excavations in Egypt looking for artifacts. Inez has spent years reading books about Egypt, learning maps, and writing hieroglyphs. Every year, she is hopeful that she will get to accompany her parents to Egypt, and every year they go without her. Sadly, Inez receives a letter from her uncle that her parents are dead. Rather than staying home to grieve, Inez decides to travel to Egypt to find out what happened to her parents. She successfully sails to Egypt and meets up with her uncle, but he doesn’t talk to her about her parents or help her find answers. She decides to try to find answers on her own, but she also finds out that she’s not been told the truth for a long time. This was a fun adventure with a mix of genres- mystery, magic, historical fiction, and a bit of romance. I’m looking forward to the second book.
