DNF'd 55% through. This was such a disappointment. I was very obsessed with Still Lives but this lacked all the initial magic and I couldn't force myself to stay on task with the characters this round

This author and her stories are not for me. I just find them so long-winded, but still boring.

Yea, this is just not catching my interest at all. I've had it for a while now and just kind of dread picking it up. The characters aren't very interesting, the museum scene isn't fleshed out, and I'm not even really sure what she's investigating? The man in the tape? Or if some high up LAAC guy knew about it? I don't know, and it's not grabbing me enough to find out what's going on

very compelling and good characters but then it falls apart in the last tenth of the book

While not quite living up to its captivating precursor, Still Lives, a Lesson in Red (nice hat-too to Sherlock Holmes) is still an engaging mystery/thriller that you enjoy tagging along for the ride. Even slightly darker given the content of our victim’s art portfolio. We see our previously known characters again as their collective and individual stories abs relationships progress which does allow the reader to become more invested in everything happening. And it’s all still a mystery until
The very end as we follow our heroine on her undercover investigation. I will definitely recommend this book to mystery and suspense lovers, especially if they have read the previous story, though one doesn’t have to in order to enjoy this one

This book about the LA art world follows Still Lives and I enjoyed it just as much as its predecessor.

I felt the art was better/better-described in this follow-up story than in Still Lives. Still Lives had paintings and a smidge of sculpture. Here it is sculpture and videos of performance art, which I think lend themselves better to a text description than paintings, and that made the art more engaging for me.

I enjoyed reading about Maggie Richter's complicated life anew. Honestly, I didn't really follow the logic for solving the mystery, nor did I understand why Maggie was targeted (as opposed to ignored/forgotten about), but I really enjoy Ms. Hummel's version of Los Angeles. If you don't care about Los Angeles or art, this probably isn't the series for you.

I'd love a third book.

Just didn't really connect with the characters. And it moved slowly. I think for me I liked when Maggie wasn't a detective in the first book and in this one it seemed like she basically was a sleuth which I didn't care for.
