Cute and fun. Easy read.

3.5 This book was a lot of fun!

This is probably more of a 3.5 start read, but I really enjoyed the narration, so I bumped it up to 4.
adventurous funny

I feel a bit conflicted about this book. On the one hand, it was very entertaining and I loved the whole idea of the school. I also really enjoyed the interactions between the characters - definitely what made the book enjoyable. On the other hand, well, I did not expect the book to be like that - somehow I expected to be a bit more blown away by the whole story, concept of the school and everything but somehow for me it just felt...okay. It was a bit strange to try to get into the story at first, with this very victorian setting, yet with futuristic mechanicals and such? I was a bit confused and felt a bit distance from the story, but I think that's just me.
I'm still curious about the second book though :)

A cute fun read. It involves a school on a dirigible, a mechanical dachshund, and Victorian teenage girls learning to be steampunk assassins. Light on plot, but a lot of fun.

Pretty cute steampunk story about a girl who is sent to a finishing school that trains young ladies in the arts of etiquette and espionage. I probably would have enjoyed this book when I was 10, but as an adult listening to it, there were a lot of missing parts to the puzzle. The main mystery, "where is the secret prototype" is not developed well at all. For example:
- Why does the main character have this as her quest? To get other people's approval.
- What does the prototype do? Something with a communication machine? Never fully explained.
- Why did the school have the prototype? Why is it valuable enough to be stolen? Why, at the end, does the British government, the badguys, another special interest group, and the school all want their hands on it?
- Who does the school work for? I mean, who commissions the girls are being trained to be spies? Not answered.

Not going to finish the series.

I've come to expect brilliant, witty steampunk adventure from Gail Carriger and I certainly was not disappointed!
Set in the same world as, but before her previous series*, and aimed at a more teen audience, this book still has all that which made the Parasol Protectorate books great for me, (great characters, dialogue, wit and madcap charm.)

In short, I loved it. Eagerly awaiting more!
