This book really could have been entertaining. The plot was excellent but not executed well. I wont be reading the second book
4.5 stars. This book was a lot of fun to read. I didn't realize it is Steam Punk but it was still really great - a fun diversion

I mean...this book is a reminder that A)I shouldn't just buy things because they are $1.99 on Kindle and B) I shouldn't read things just because they are on my Kindle. It's not great, but I bet 9-12 year old inventor-type girls would really like it.

LOVED IT. Absolutely loved it. It's been recommended to me multiple times, but "I don't do Steampunk." Except, yeah, I think I do now. I can't wait to read more.

I didn't like this as much as The Parasol Protectorate. I know she is simplifying the plot for a younger audience, but I found way too many plot elements contrived. Sophronia invariably stumbled upon the very information she needed just when she needed it.
Also, the names were stumbling blocks that threw me out of the story time and time again. I'm looking at you, Sidheag. Gaelic phonetics drive me batty. I even looked up the pronunciation, and it didn't stop me from losing my train of thought every time she appeared.

I enjoyed this book. It fits firmly into the YA genre, and while I didn't enjoy it as much as the Parasol Protectorate books, it was another intriguing look into the world that Carriger has created. I look forward to reading the rest of this series!
