I wanted to love this since I love the Parasol Protectorate series so much but this first book fell a little flat for me. The characters were a little underdeveloped and the plot was missing a few elements that I felt it needed (more about the "prototype"). I do intend to continue with it but I think I may wait until the series is complete before I move. An okay effort but not memorable or outstanding.
Boring, boring, boring. How is everything I'm reading lately so painfully friggin boring?
The premise of this book sounded so interesting and WOULD have been so interesting, if the author had bothered to write the story she advertised in the summary. I was under the impression that we would actually see these girls go through the training at "Finishing School" to become assassins and that something exciting would occur after.
Neither of those things happened. The training was entirely glossed over (except for the eyelash fluttering which we had to hear about time and again.) and the spy portion of the plot was so childish, it was laughable. The entire thing was suited for younger girls, maybe thirteen at the most. I personally wouldn't have classified this as YA at all but whatever.
Huge disappointment, definitely won't be picking up the second one.

A good 3.5. It was a bit quirky but was good enough. It towards the end I was wondering where this was going and could be a little childish in spots, but in spots it was amusing. It filled my reading need until the book I was hoping for came in.

4.5 --- Man, that was super cute, super funny and super feminist in a light way. I loved it!
YA Fiction
Well written and interesting with well-developed characters - not a lot of surprises, but then - it is YA.
A young lady - 14 yrs old - who's mother despairs of her - send her to a 'finishing' school that is nothing like the schools one hears about. Along with grace, languages, dancing, etc, the girls are taught the finer points of poisoning, distraction, knife-work, subterfuge, etc.
Very, Very Cute.

What a fun story! Snarky, creative, and with a little mystery and suspense. Loved it!
I have forgotten how much I thoroughly enjoy Gail Carriger.
