Insightful thoughts on love, mixed with some interesting science. I’ll remember how people with more grit and determination have more lasting relationships, and how the stories we tell ourselves about relationships can shape and determine their outcomes.

Thanks to Goodreads for a copy of this book.

First of all, I thought it was good that Lehrer acknowledged all of the plagiarism from his previous works and took ownership of the fall-out surrounding that right from the very first page. That being said, I felt like this book was a really great compilation of LOADS of research (which was meticulously footnoted and cited, as it should have been) but very little by way of original thought.

If you are looking for a book that gathers research over the topic of different kinds of love (between adults, within marriage, towards kids, even regarding religion) then this is your book. I had to force myself through it though because it was DRY. Also having an educational background in psychology means that I've heard of probably half of these studies already so it was not anything new. Even the parts that were just Lehrer talking, seemed...well....trite? I got the feeling this book was his attempt to honor his wife for sticking with him and to prove that he could write without ripping people off. In the end, I appreciated the effort more than the final product.

I skimmed through some of this as it was a bit repetitive, nothing new but is very simple with ideas.

I love love. This book taught me more about love and made me love love more. This was such a fantastic study into the different factors that change how we love or cause us to love.  I greatly recommend it to everyone!

Finally, after nearly 3 months of reading bits and pieces at a time, I have finished A Book About Love. It was actually a really great read, despite the obnoxious amount of time it took me to get through it. This book examines many different variants of love. Love for a partner, love for friends, love for your children. It explores experiments and research and really made me question everything I thought I knew about love.

"The mystery of love is the mystery of our lives: we are bound by a force we cannot fathom, driven by desires we cannot deny. Because there is no resisting the feeling: our existence depends on it. So we keep falling in love and falling again."

A Book About Love is an interesting and more than that informative read. It is not just about love, but also the various psychological/emotional that lead to or directly/indirectly involved with Love. The book is not very focused on the subject (Title: Love), but has some good points.

Some interesting studies mentioned, but any book about "love" is bound to a be a bit pop. Well-written though, as you'd expect from Lehrer and interesting to see how he addressed his previous instances of plagiarism too.
