This book was recommended to me both by GoodReads and by some friends, so I went into this with some expectations. All in all, I can say that this book is not quite on the level of some other books in this genre ([b:Leviathan Wakes|8855321|Leviathan Wakes (Expanse, #1)|James S.A. Corey|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1289046195s/8855321.jpg|13730452] comes to mind), but was still pretty engaging.
It managed to grab me pretty much from page one, and refused to let me go until the last page, which is more than I can say about some other books. So, all in all, I will definitely continue reading this series and would recommend fans of SciFi to give it a try, but unless it improves after the first book, I would probably recommend [b:Leviathan Wakes|8855321|Leviathan Wakes (Expanse, #1)|James S.A. Mini-Review:
An interesting start to a military SF. I believe Captain Jack Geary will grow on me. A bit clunky & repetitive on certain parts of the story. It's rather clear what you are suppose to think and feel but it felt a bit flat to me. The setup was heavy handed and not a whole lot happened.
I like the different perspective presented in the story. Instead of a well organized & regimented space force, there is a battle worn fleet that is made up of mavericks and little organization. I'll definitely continue the series to see where the story arc lands.
I hope the aliens are interesting.

It was pretty good, but I felt like he creates too much artificial drama. I think it's worth the read if you like military sci-fi and I will probably read the next book in the series. I really enjoyed the sense of development that happened over the course of the story.
Good solid read. Enjoyable and well written.
Will consider picking up the rest of the series.

I was told that I would like it...and I did. It isn't the greatest in Lit, but it was a good space story. I will continue the series. I like the idea that the protagonist is dealing with. I would not want to be in his shoes.
By the way, I listened to the audio book. I usually like to read for myself, but this was enjoyable.

Hooked me right from the start. Spaceship battles have never been so interesting to read. Interesting examinations of military culture and a sympathetic, intelligent main character. Looking forward to book 2.
This book very much reminded me of one of the old "Wooden Ships, Iron Men" novels from Forester and Kent. The plot wasn't too ambitious, and the action was credible. I liked it, and moved on to its sequel gladly.
Jack Campbell's got a great idea, a promising premise and a good protagonist. Waking from a 100 year hibernation, a soldier finds he's been idolized into a legend he never was--and his fleet is stuck deep in enemy territory. The only way out is in.
I enjoyed the idea, and I enjoy a good space battle, especially when there is attention to the physics of outer space. This is no George Lucas creation where the laser screech by and the fighters fly like airplanes in an atmosphere. Kudos to Campbell for attempting to keep true to the physics of deep space.
I also liked that Campbell payed attention to the quandrys that would arise between an upstart officer and ambitious insubordinates, as well as the politics and moral dilemmas of war and democracy.
I only gave it three stars because, despite the good ideas, he punches through the complex issues too quickly, doesn't spend enough time giving depth to the characters, or makes them completely one sided, a friend or a foe of the protagonist, himself completely noble and unbelievable in his characteristics.
A fun, and quick, read, but, in the end, probably completely forgettable.
