Decent enough space opera. I've liked some aspects of the premise, the long retreat seems extremely promising set up. Space battles description is the strength of this book and that's unusual thing for me to say. Long battle description usually put me to sleep, but not this time!
However... some of the dialog is painfully stilted and unnatural and characters tend towards completely flat.
The thing that frustrated me the most is wilful stupidity of basically ALL characters barring main character. I am no soldier nor general, but some of the suggestions they ALL resisted are so obvious I can't believe non of them would have thought about those on their own.
I could have excused most of that if it improved in the second book. It didn't, I've found second book un-finishable.

Very good space science fiction. Very realistic handling of military ships in space; very "naval" (in the best meaning of the word): mass and momentum, combat in space, visible sensors and the time it takes for light to get from one place to another. Realistic handling of leadership in a large space fleet.
