Missed doing reviews for a wee while - but I've been rereading this series - started with the first to refresh my memory then got re hooked. Not going to do big reviews of them all, but in terms of space opera they'r excellent. In a way, they're a bit like the " Old Man's War" series. A veteran of a conflict - Jack Geary - is woken after almost 100 years hibernation in a survival capsule. The 2 human opposing forces' tactics and moral rules of engagement have deteriorated, with no real tactics and frequent war crimes. "Black Jack" has been lionised as a hero during his sleep, and arrives just in time to slowly turn the tide of battle. He introduces old concepts of military honour and tactical thinking, and slowly turns the tide of the war.
Jack Campbell must be the first person to write convincingly about "naval" fleet engagements and warfighting in 3 dimensions! A bit like WE Johns "Biggles", who was a source of advice for fighter pilots in WW1 and WW2!

What a fun read! I love space opera and this is done extremely well. I really enjoyed Black Jack Geary as a character, both the heroic image he is forced to project as well as the self-deprecating man he truly is. The science here is done well too, providing the reader an appreciation of the vastness of space and the time lag inherent in engaging an enemy of light seconds/minutes of distance. Things may fall into place a little too easily at times, and so this is more of a 4.5/5 review, but overall it was a quick, enjoyable and at times intense read. I'm looking forward to reading more of the series.

Was hoping for a fun space opera type of book but unfortunately this was far from that. The characters lack any substance and the book is mostly just military naval fleet jargon and strategy over any meaningful storyline or character development. And I love military history (studied it in college) but this just didn't really go anywhere.

YAWN. Never have I read such a boring sci fi novel. The entire thing is battle strategy and literally nothing else. Maybe if you’re a war vet, this would interest you, but truly don’t bother.

I'm not usually one to dive into this type of book, and I wasn't sure if it was going to be my cup of tea. But you know what? I ended up loving it! And honestly, I have no idea why.
Now, I'm typically the type of girly who sticks to romance fantasy novels, so why on earth did I pick up this book? Let me tell you.
So, imagine this: there's this dude who's supposed to be this big-time hero because he died a century ago in some war. But, surprise! He's not quite as dead as everyone thought. Now, he's stuck in the middle of the same old war, trying to live up to everyone's crazy high expectations.
That sounded like a hell of a good time to me, and guess what? It was! While I missed the mushy sentimental stuff (though I'm predicting the start of a little romance in the next book), I was all about the military strategy and hardcore thinking going on. I'm definitely going to be grabbing more books of this genre (you are more than invited to leave some recs for me) and continue reading the series.

Normalmente no elijo este tipo de libros, y cuando lo empecé no estaba segura de si me iba a gustar. Pero, adivina buen adivinador. Me encantó.

I tend to lean towards the fantasy half of scifi/fantasy, and am pickier about my scifi choices; however, this one was what I pulled out of my blind tbr pile grab. I almost, almost, put it down after the first couple pages. I just wasn't settling into it, but I gave it a few more pages then it leveled out and sucked me along into the Fleet's flight through space. It reminded me of an adult Ender's Game, but it's not really. It's it's own ball of space battles. I love Geary's strength of ethics and how he's reminding his fleet to stand true, with honor. His fluctuation between military-know-how and inexperience made me wonder for awhile, but it was all explained as the story progressed. It was a good blind grab. I'll be keeping an eye out for the rest of the series on my book hunts.
I'm going to review all five books of "The Lost Fleet" series in one fell swoop here.
I had a love hate relationship with these books. I really enjoyed the space battles and voyage home. Black Jack Geary was an interesting and good character, but at times he'd just annoy the hell out of me with his whiny self-doubt.
The first book was very good. Second book also good. Third started to get me really not liking the whining and self-doubt. Fourth book was about the same and then the fifth book pulled it all back in.
I'm thinking this needed to be a trilogy instead of five books. Was it strung out on purpose? The writing was never bad, but the move from system to system on the way back home stretched over five books was a bit much.
As I said, the fifth book was quite good and did a nice job of tying things up while leaving the door open for his next series. I might check that one out but need a break for a bit.
Overall rating is 3 stars, but I'll mark the books individually.
