3.0

This is the second book in a series, but I enjoyed it on its own. The main character is fun. It was really interesting to learn more about life in the US immediately after the Civil War.

The opening of the book was a bit slow.  After the main plot started, the pace was fast, and the book was hard to put down.

I might have rated this book higher if I were reading the entire series. I never understood the reason for the mission, which might have been clear if I had read the first book. The ending left me wondering how a secondary character will react to something that happens.
