I knew nothing of this book when it was chosen for our book club to read in October. I found it difficult to get into at the beginning, but that went away as I got deeper into the book. Overall, I thought the book was not bad, just not something I really cared about. I liked the humor, and the Gideon character was interesting to me.

This struck me as a really long introduction or set up to a whole other book, actually. A setup that may be too much work for some people, and understandably so.

I can't say for sure if I will continue on, though I'm tempted to try at least one more book.

The underpinning / logic of the book I found a little slight and underdeveloped, but that could be in the name of keeping mysteries for the rest of the series. I don't know.

Overall, it was fine. I've read books that touched me more, and I've read a lot worse than this.

Review TK after I finish Harrow !

ETA, on September 29, 2023: I never actually added a review here. But this series fucking rules, and now having read three of the four books I can more confidently state that this one is a WHOPPER and BANGER of a first installment. Those who are Better At Conspiracy Boards than I have noted that we’ll probably be looking at Canaan House again in Alecto so BRING IT ON, BABY

Nearly DNF'd this but was holding out for some spectacular ending or something which would explain the vast array of positive reviews. It was clichéd and dull. The writing style was try-hard and the comedy didn't land. I detested the characters, each moment with them being a complete drag. The writer relied too much on the same repetitive sentence forms.

advice? dont read this book unless you want to cry so hard you almost throw up and then suffer from a horrible headache the rest of the day.

this book is 100 million percent exactly my humor. i laughed out loud on a plane several times (how embarrassing). Gideon reminds me of Rao from Prophet by Sin Blache and Helen Macdonald

con: first 100 pages i had really no idea what was going on. honestly some things i didnt even grasp til i was reading the little info bits in the glossary at the end
