The book is about necromancy in a space empire center on LGBT+ characters but it’s focus is not on romance despite the advertising done by TikTok. However there are romantic elements within the story

one does not bind their soul to another without some kind of love for the other unless you are Ianthe

. It is an intellectual read that covers up the horror story unfolding underneath the language. It was easier to read via audiobook than by book alone.

fucking superb. i read it twice back-to-back because of all the excellent foreshadowing. it's full of characters you will love and events you'll hate and when you finish you will be screaming to the sky because literally w h a t.

Due to how necromancers work in this world, there is a lot of detailed descriptions of death, blood, and gore. Sometimes the blood/flesh of other people, most frequently their own in order to interact with bones and spirits. There is one description of a character that tied power to an eating disorder, but mentioned in passing. Medical trauma, terminal illness and cancer go together in one character

though mainly used to demonstrate how difficult it is to kill her.

All onscreen violence is either fighting skeletons/raised dead, sword fighting/melee, or a combination of both (and training montages). All the children in one house die

so that they could guarantee having a pregnancy with a necromancer.
