Along with Lisey’s Story, this might be one of my favorite Stephen King books.

This was alright. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to follow up on Danny Torrance, though nothing will ever compare to The Shining, which I think actually had a satisfying ending. I was kinda sad to have had Wendy Torrance and Dick Hallorann glossed over as characters in this one, but I guess that's fine, the book was supposed to be about Dan, and toward the end
more about Abra I suppose. I'd for sure read a third book if it was more about Abra. I think Stephen does a good job touching on how the psychic abilities of teen girls affect them on a daily and psychological level but it leaves me wanting more depth.

I think the antagonists (the True Knot - or Naught, I listened to this so not sure about spelling) were kinda cartoonishly evil and too easily defeated. But that's fine with me, I'm usually more interested in character than action anyway.

Tons of content warnings in this one, some I may have forgotten to tag, but it's a King novel so...if you're sensitive tread carefully.

I recently read The Shining and wanted to read the sequel soon after, so it would be fresh in my mind. I think that could be why I enjoyed this book so much, because it felt like an easy continuation of Danny's story. Both of these books feel like very specific times in King's life, with Doctor Sleep looking back at his alcoholic past and understanding who he was.

Despite its mammoth size, this book is a fast read and I didn't feel like it was slow anywhere. It reminded me a little of The Outsider in the terms of a group of older folk going after a supernatural monster that preys on children, but I enjoyed that one as well.

I think if you have kids or you're especially sensitive to violence against children it won't be a fun read for you, but I really enjoyed it.

I love this book. I can't wait to read it again. It's not as scary as The Shining with regard to hauntings, this instead takes a dark sci-fi turn. Horrifying in a different way. I love the mix of characters, and I loved seeing all of what the Shining power can do. I love the choice of the villain. Really unique idea!
