Jim is building up strength and stats for his inevitable showdown with the Dark Overlord. Side quests keep pulling him off course, but every battle and interaction brings him a little more XP. His missions become more dangerous, and his cohorts are equally wrapped up in fatal attacks. Jim is forced to say goodbye to those he has grown to love, fueling his rage further.
The epic continues! I love the throwbacks to the previous books and jokes, and I love that Jim hasn't lost his Reasons Why. He wants revenge for Jarra, for the elves, for Badgelor, for all the people the Overlord has hurt and killed over the years. He's leveling, getting stronger, and his friends are growing too. The series is great, but I admit some of the side quest stories are a bit long-winded and don't seem to add too much more than action scenes (though I DO love those so it's hard to complain). Definitely eager for the next-- final???-- book!

Okay so not the end of the story...
Well some form of end
but in a good RPG there isn't really an end
Instead of a new book I kinda wanna play WoW now...

This book felt like a series finale. In a way, it was. The author took some time off from writing to take care of his wife after she was diagnosed with a serious illness. I'm overjoyed that she's recovered and he's back to writing because this series brings me so much joy. This book had some sad moments - I almost cried when Dalton revealed how he became Sir Dalton to live up to his daughters' expectations of him, and how he vowed never to leave anyone behind after his mistake in leaving the townsfolk behind in the goblin camp resulted in the deaths of all of the adults. It was also a beautiful echo of what Jim went through in the very first book, proving that Jim is the True Mayor of Windfall. I definitely teared up when Badgelor revealed the vow that meant that Charles's death would result in his own death as well. I'm glad the book didn't end here because the epilogue hinted at more war badgers, so I'm very hopeful that the existence of more of his species means a loophole in his vow. I love Badgelor so much that I want to get a tattoo of a badger on my shoulder with the words "You've got this! I believe in you!"
