Faulkner is at his best when he's the most confusing. This novel is composed of long, long sentences of stream-of-consciousness, winding around and around the thoughts of several narrators. In the eye of this storm is Quentin Compson, a narrator whose main struggle is with narration itself. Time and time again narration is stolen from him, most humiliatingly from his Canadian roommate Shreve, who mocks Quentin's very heritage in claiming that the South is "better than the theatre" in terms of twists, turns, reversals and recognitions.

The book absorbs you in this story even as you barely understand what's happening. Hours would go by as I struggled page by page, though I barely noticed time passing. Slowly we gain more details, a Greek tragedy with no dramatic irony for we too find out along with the characters what is to happen next.

Very glad I took this in a classroom context. Not sure I could've read it on my own and picked up on everything. Also, must read The Sound and the Fury. It was a bit frustrating to not have that under my belt, since the characters and the plot overlap so much.

This is undoubtedly my favorite book of all time. It's the prime of American southern gothic fiction. It's challenging, it makes you want to quit, but the story is rewarding—from a historical and psychological standpoint.
