A very difficult read, the details of the horrors of this fight take you to new depths of suffering and inhumanity. meticulously researched and based on many combatant experiences. However why are there no, repeat no maps at all? So much of this is located in specific places on or around the island and it is really difficult to visualise relationships between places.

A great overview of the battle. I loved that he sought to understand the psychological reasons why troops acted the ways that they did on both sides. But what makes this book truly useful is his attempted thoughts on the atomic bomb at the end of the book in light of the fighting that went on in Okinawa.
