This is a great classic story that most people probably know in some form or another. I enjoy ERB's books for the most part. They are good, simple, action/adventure stories. It was written in 1912, so you find a lot of Euro-centrism, racism, and sexism littered throughout the entire book. He writes much about "the lower orders", "the blacks/negroes", and about women being governed more by their emotions than reason. I don't agree with any of those types of ideas, back looking past those is a good story.

I did not expect this book to grip me as much as it did, there is so much to this book and in my opinion the story within is far better than any retellings I've read. the only bit I did not enjoy was the ending however it had to end the way it did I assume for the next book in the series. I will confirm at some point as I have added the next book to my tbr pile.

It was interesting to read the original Tarzan. I only watched the Disney animated movie. A lot of details that were in the movie must have completely passed over my head as a child. It was only through reading the book that I understood them. I was surprised at the ending, though. I was expecting the movie ending so I was disappointed.

Edgar Rice Burroughs definitely shows improvement as he moves from his first success with John Carter/Barsoom to his second big hit, Tarzan. The book is a little choppy due to the fact that it was originally published as a series of entries in a pulp magazine.

The story is very different from the Disney sanitized version that I grew up with. A Phil Collins soundtrack would be a very strange choice for this Tarzan who often stalks and murders his fellow man.

There’s lots of promise here and I can see why this initial story led to dozens of sequels, movies, and comics.

This book was a "recommend for a recommend" book from a great friend. The first portion of the book was...rough. But as soon as Jane entered the story I was enthralled. I also have NOT gotten over how good that cliffhanger got me. Wow! I look forward to reading the rest.

It's one of those books that I'm glad I finally read, but did I love it? No

I will say that it was interesting, learning that Burroughs had never been to Africa and what he thought life was like there. There was also even more suspensions of disbelief than I thought I would need. (My friends said that I obsessed a little too much about him learning to read.)

If you are a huge Tarzan movie fan, than you will find this interesting to know about the origins of the story, but if you are a take it or leave it Tarzan person, then maybe go for another book.
