I read/listened this book over the Holidays while traveling. I had only ever seen the TV shows and the movies. Wow! ERB can write a fabulous tale! Wish I had read these years ago.

I guess I should have known how different the book was set to be. I'm used to the musical adaptation in all of it's glory. I was not planning on seeing Kala, Kerchak AND Terkoz go.

Fun, exciting read. This book has everything: mutiny, blood, guts, love, battles, pirate treasure. Oh, and racism. Lots and lots of racism.

Can I kill somebody? Why in the name of God didn't Tarzan tell the truth? I just can't understand, he could simply marry Jane and have a happy life with her. But he didn't and now I have to read se second book to figure out what the hell will happen.

*if you don’t like to read romance, specially historical romance, don’t even try to pick this one up*
I have been wanting to read this book ever since i know about the story of Tarzan (thanks Disney) and even more after The Legend of Tarzan came out in 2016, so five days ago after watching the animated movie for the second time in one week i decided it was to gather some balls and read this, and I have to say I´m pleasantly surprised at how this turned out.
Before I go into my thoughts i want to make note of some things;
1. I read a lot of historical romance
2. I never read classics in fear they might have a very strange vocabulary
*THINGS THAT I LIKED*
- Tarzan. Well ofc, he’s the main character and hero of the story. But seriously he was super sweet and innocent and naive he kind of won my heart. He is extremely smart, handsome, strong and cunning, it was like reading the story of a Greek hero, in fact; that’s how he’s described many times!
- The jungle. It was such a nice setting for this story, every description of the wilderness was so well done and so detailed that i felt like i was there at times.
- The story. I feel like this is an obvious one, this story is as iconic as it gets, but the way Tarzan’s life before the arrival of the Porter’s is showcased is so good, I loved to see more about how he grew up and how it was like to realize that you’re not what you think you are, I can’t exactly pin point it but the way Tarzan goes about his life and learns how to write and read and shave and uncovers bits of his past while balancing his life with the tribe was so enchanting to read. The whole story was very fast paced and i was not bored
- The action. Being that my only prior knowledge about the story was the Disney movie I wasn’t expecting the level of action, or more like violence, that i got BUT i ended up loving it. That’s how nature is, gruesome, it makes sense that a book about a man raised on the jungle would be this graphic.
- D’ArnotxTarzan. It was so unexpected but so well needed. I was expecting Tarzan to have some friends in the jungle but at least we have Paul, who came late but at least he appeared and is of more use than Tantor or a Terk. It was like a teacher/pupil relationship, i would rEALLY APpreciATE if there’s more of it on the next book.
- Jane. I’m putting her in this side of the list because i feel neutral about her; she reminds me of the girls that appear in historical romance books (which is not a bad thing) she was stubborn and wanted things to happen the way she desires it, she has a strong will, but she also was so indecisive and careless and impulsive i wanted to shake her until she realized how bad she messed up
*WHAT I DIDNT LIKE*
- the writing. It sounds weird after talking about how much i liked the descriptions and the action scenes, but it sometimes reached a point (the descriptions of the forest and the surroundings) where i had to go back and listen/read again because i would get lost. There are these parts where a fight between Tarzan and another animal go down but then it ends as soon as it starts. I could totally say that this is the way the author wanted it to be, trying to depict how this happens every time in the animal kingdom and its almost part of their lifestyle or idk, but i can also say that Mr. Rice didn’t know how to write a mutiny or a physical fight at length
- Archimedes Porter. I’d rather have the one from the Disney movie, he was so obnoxious and pedant I really didn’t care about the character. Maybe, just maybe, i feel so bad about him because of how i thought he would be and then was let down to see that he was actually pondering the idea of marrying Jane even if she doesn’t want to when the animated one literally told her “if this is what makes u happy then go for it babe”
- The lack of a villain. It’s not like I don’t like that there’s no villain, it’s more of i wanted to hate William but he did nothing wrong (except bad mouthing Tarzan but whatever)
- The insta love. I *really don’t like instalove stories*, and this is no exception, i cringed whenever Jane said “I love you” after knowing the dude for less than 2 days. But i pulled thru because of Tarzan ✊🏻😔
Bottom line, i really liked it and I’ll read the next book and maybe the next few. but I’m definitely not reading the whole thing, like; 20 fucking books? Uh i think the fuck not.
