I’ve given out quite a few five star reviews this year but this one was definitely deserving! My goodness! A completely different writing style than Harry Potter and yet, J.K. Rowling has written another series that I love so much as an adult!

I loved how there were so many suspected criminals and how thorough strike was with his detective work. The actual killer wasn’t even on my radar! I loved how “Robert Gailbraith” sewed everything up through the convo strike had at the end of the book. He explained every detail and how he knew who the killer was which I always appreciate in murder mystery books.

Honestly just very well done. I just finished and I’m already requesting the second one in the series so I can get started on it ASAP!

Very well written, very great plot, wonderful, realistic characters and amazing, unexpected twists and turns! Loved it!

I left if far too long to read this book, and only (finally) picked it up as it was available from the library on my cruise. I feel like that's not a conventional opening to a 5* review, but hey ho.

I loved it. It has nothing to do with my love for JK Rowling, it's just a bloody good book! The characters that have been created are rich and detailed, and refreshingly normal(?), and legitimately flawed.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between the two leads. It's so different to the often cliché relationships in book between male/female characters, and between boss/assistant.

The story is strong and appeals to the detective lover in me, and I shifted through it too quick. There is a healthy amount of assumption, and the main character is pieces everything together in a really brilliant way.

I liked the characterization, didn't love the plot. I look forward to the television series, though!

I know this book got mixed reviews, but I absolutely loved it. I will say that I was a major fan of Harry Potter and I really enjoyed A Casual Vacancy, but I went into this one with a totally open mind, because that's exactly how JKR wanted her readers to go into it.

I immediately fell in love with Cormoran's character. He's bitter, he's sad, he's kind of pitiful, he's funny, and he's intelligent. I felt like he was one of those characters that you have to love, even if you don't want to. I thought the mystery itself was very well put together. It stayed interesting throughout the book and it wasn't so predictable that I figured it out and got bored halfway through. I'm normally able to figure something out in these kinds of books, but I was kept guessing until the moment the case was resolved.

Overall, really pleased with this book. I cannot wait to read the next chapter in Cormoran Strike's story!

Although a long read, I found it exceptionally enjoyable. I couldn’t wait to find out the next details of the investigation. Cormoran Strike is a likable character, with a rough history. The plot line was complex, as there were multiple characters intertwined. I am looking forward to reading the next two in the series!

Finished it and liked it. Drawn out old school investigation, but I did like that. Clever case. It kept me reading and that's quite a feat these days. I also liked the characters and their chemistry or non-chemistry. Curious of the next installment.

This is a good one. "Galbraith" 's debut is clever and kept me on the edge of my seat, parceling out clues bit by bit. I'm eager to see what else lies in store for Strike...

First read 22 August 2013.
Re-read 1 September 2017. My original thoughts below still stand. 5 stars.

I'm not a fan of hyped books. I am always wary and extra twitchy when a book is lauded. So it was with hesitation and trepidation that I picked up "The Cuckoo's Calling" by Robert Galbraith (now commonly known as JK Rowling's pseudonym).

Oh what a delight!

It took me a little while to lay to rest that this was JK Rowling's work and stop comparing it to the Harry Potter series. Not to mention overly critique her foray into adult literature (having not read A Casual Vacancy). Once I passed that, it was sublime. Pure enjoyment. Lost in the plot (one of JK's greatest strength's is her ability to paint a vivid picture so complete with detail you can feel it, taste it and sense it!) and following each twist and turn until the conclusion.

I can only hope there are many more to this series. J'adore!

It was mildly interesting. Enough to finish but I won’t read anymore in the series. Unlikeable main characters is my biggest issue.

So full of suspense, I was gripped from the first page. It was so different to other murder books I've read, and kept me guessing right to the end.
