The three parts of this book almost felt like different books entirely. I loved the first part and how it established character and setting, and I’m always a sucker for a good training montage era but this is the best way I’ve ever seen it written. Parts two and three were…horrific, in the best way possible. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and each chapter left me wanting more. Can’t wait to read the next two books - which is probably why I ordered them not even halfway through this book as I knew I was in love already.

Rin fights from the first page to the last one. She fights to leave her village, to get in the academy and to stay there  Nothing comes easily to her. It's a masterpiece about war, colonialism, gods and responsibilities.
