Would have rated higher but page 612-613 has this awful white supremacy diatribe about how cultures like the Inuit and Native Americans weren't conquered and crumbled because of guns, disease and violence but because the people lost confidence in their own culture in the face of seeing another culture that's actually sophisticated and nuanced when theirs isn't. DISGUSTING.

It was written nearly 40 years ago and feels quite old fashioned. It is long but I enjoyed listening to it so didn’t mind, not sure I’d have felt the same reading it

Ugh, this book could have been so good. The first 400 or so pages are really good setup, but the payoff is nonsensical, preachy, and disappointing at best. The second half is basically just catholic propaganda and genocide denial

with a very lackluster reveal that it was aliens all along, an evil atheist who tries to nuke everyone because he resents his christian upbringing, and guess what? The aliens are catholic too! (Not exactly, but pretty much)
