I read this after reading Water for Elephants. It's a very different "voice" than Elephants. It's a great book for horse lovers and mothers and daughters. My mom read this and also liked it.

I had no idea that "Flying Changes" was the sequel to "Riding Lessons", so I read them out of order. Like "Flying Changes," this book was ok, but nothing spectacular. It's a solid family drama, with a lot of technical info on horses and running a stable. Maybe if I had the childhood pony fixation, I would have liked this better! I would still give Gruen a chance, because I loved "[b:Water for Elephants|43641|Water for Elephants|Sara Gruen|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1170161179s/43641.jpg|3441236]" so much.

Interesting story, pretty well written, but it seemed like it was a bit scatter-brained.... seemed like it was kind of hard to tie up all the loose ends. Fun read, though.

While I could not pull myself away from the book, it's very similar to a train wreck that you just can't stop looking at. I kept wondering how Annemarie has such bad luck, how she is such a failure at every single thing, and why she is so emotional. I'm glad that I didn't feel sucked into this book completely, because her drama is over the top.

Hard to believe this is the same person who wrote Water for Elephants. The book starts like a bad country song with one thing after another going wrong for the main character...and things just keep going wrong, although of course it all wraps up rather nicely. There was no real flow to the writing style. It almost seemed as if there were several different authors due to how the writing style seemed to suddenly change from section to section.

I enjoyed this book. Annemarie makes a disaster of so many things in her life. It doesn't seem possible that she can repair the damage. It sometimes seemed that there were issues with time passing in this book..maybe a little unevenly paced. I still enjoyed the story and the endings....

This book is just a trainwreck of bad decisions, terrible events, and unreasonable, awful people. Nothing good ever happens; it just strings out the worst again and again until I'm left feeling overly anxious for no reason at all.

The only characters I really liked were the horses, and they were barely in the novel. I was hoping for at least more horses in a horse novel, and was disappointed.
