A very interesting compilation of Hispanic history from the 1400s to modern day America. Insight into the life of the conqueror and the conquered. The reminder that these Latin American countries hated their neighbors. That there are other peoples (besides African Americans) who suffered abuses of power and segregation.

I feel I want to discover more! For readers who need a nonfiction text, this is an excellent choice! Fantastic author behind this work. All of the different points of view worked. And really are necessary for an accurate tale to be told.

I wasn’t a fan of the poetry style but it was a moving book with so many differing perspectives across history & of memorable people who made history. I learned quite a bit from this middle grade book & would recommend it from middle grade to adults.

Realistically more of a 3.5 ... I wanted to love this book. I love Margarita Engle, I thought the concept was cool. I just don't see many of my students being impressed enough to find out more, and there are no footnotes for more information; just a listing of a few books Engle read for more info. I do love the illustrations!

We got this book to complement what my son (age 11) was learning in history.  We read the first poems that started with the Americas before and during the time when Europeans came.  I think that it gave the information more of an informal feel to learning what happened during that time.  My kid wasn't a huge fan of the book, but he's not one that generally likes poetry.  I finished reading the book and I thought that it had a lot of interesting information in it that was presented in this format, which is different than most.  I liked how it was told from a Latinx viewpoint.  I loved the drawings in the book and those were probably my favorite.
