Rutu Modan

3.91 AVERAGE

I was most fascinated by Regina, and her experience in WWII Poland. It was so deep and I really connected with her, but the story started to drag eventually (for me, anyway) which can be frustrating in a graphic novel.

Really disliked the art, but the story hurt so badly that I didn't care by the end.

I don't know why, but graphic novels have really spoken to me this year. The Property by Rutu Modan follows Regina Segal and her granddaughter, Mica, to Warsaw in search of a family property lost during World War II. Of course, not all is as it seems. Mica soon learns that her savta is there with a different agenda.

I think I've watched too many movies with a similar plot because nothing really surprised me, but I still enjoyed the journey, especially Regina's. The art and visual characterization of the landscape was well-done. I would have loved a few more peeks back at Regina's past in Warsaw. My favorite part was
Spoilerthe surprising appearance of Nazis.

I think I expected something droll and disturbing in this story of young woman joining her grandmother in traveling from Israel to Poland to reclaim a property lost during the Holocaust. Not sure, but, regardless, I wanted to try it because I really enjoyed Rutu Modan's Exit Wounds. Well, she pulls it off. This is touching yet charming and complicated in the clash of cultures, generations and histories. Much going on here, including a somehow entertaining cynicism at the Holocaust tourist industry.

A relatively fast read, but a good one that weaves secrets, the Shoah, and the delicate strands between generations together in a poignant, often very funny way.

Loved the art style and the subtle changes in facial expressions depending on the characters' mood. I hope this gets made into a movie, preferably animated.
