Rutu Modan

3.91 AVERAGE

Well drawn. Pretty good.

The Property is probably my favorite so far by Rutu Modan. Good, twisting plot, memorable and hilarious characters, and a setting rendered beautiful and melancholy by the colors and lines. Panel structure is used effectively for many plot elements to take place brilliantly, like the parallel phone call scene. Various languages are dealt with in a simple and effective way that doesn't take away from the story. The lettering is pleasing to the eye, both in upper and lowercase. As always, I like that Modan's characters are real; they are not always extremely likable or easy to understand, and they have their faults and virtues. The story is a very sad one at the core, but there is also abundant humor, mainly due to the antics of the grandmother and the lover of Mica's aunt.

Recommended for those who like Polish food, old photos, Sweden in the summer, and comic book artists.

A grand-daughter takes her grandmother to Poland to reclaim a property lost during the war, but more is going on than a straightforward quest for restitution.

Del club de lectura de cómic. A ratos confuso, una mezcla de costumbrismo y recuerdo del Holocausto que no termina de cuajar.

A story of a family secret, kept so long, that everyone has a different notion of the truth. Many strange, sometimes funny, somewhat heart-breaking, situations occur due to the secrets kept by Mica's grandmother when they return after generations to Warsaw, supposedly to reclaim their lost property.

As the story unfolds readers are able to piece together the hidden truth, and then wait to see whether or not Mica is able to piece together the story that her grandmother, Regina, obviously wants to remain hidden.

While all that is going on they also must deal with Regina's son in law, who is certain that Regina will give any property rights to Mica instead of his family and so tries to keep a close eye on the pair to stake his own claim.

The story is funny, sad and complicated and definitely compelling. The art lends itself perfectly to the tones, expressions are especially well done, the surprise on Regina's face when she was caught in a lie, the heartbreak when her secret signal was not returned.

A beautiful story paired with beautiful artwork. Fans of Persepolis (which is mentioned) would appreciate this story.

I finished this in two sittings. Not only is the book beautiful and in full colour throughout, the story is beautiful as well. The characterisation is very well done, all of the characters are memorable and likeable. Sometimes they act out, but we always find out that they had their reasons. I don't want to say anymore as not to spoil it. Recommended!

Spectacular!

I love this so so much; I like it more than Exit Wounds. In some ways it's similar - complicated family dynamics, children searching for maybe hopeless answers - but it comes together in a way that I think Exit Wounds does not. All the characters are so interesting and different; Regina especially is so likable and wonderful. I loved (small spoiler) when she hit someone on the head with her purse! What a lady. I am Polish but was born here and have only been to Warsaw as a tourist; it was really interesting and fun to see it from this perspective.
